The Importance of Doing What We Say

Catalogado en: blog-en

Life so that when your children think of fairness and integrity, they think of you.

H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

A couple of weeks ago we went to the beach together as a family. On the way my husband was very aware of the speed limit and repeatedly said, ‘I’m going at the speed specified on the sign but the cars passed me by like I was stopped.’

As midway my oldest son said ‘Dad, I think you’re the only one in this world that respects the speed limit.’ Wow, my husband and I were surprised. At that moment I remembered this quote of H. Jackson Brown, because although we were not trying to teach anything to our children at that time, our children were watching and learning by example what their father was doing in that moment.

So if we think our kids do not realize or aren’t watching us, we are wrong, our children are learning and absorbing every moment what we do and the actions and decisions we make every day. My mother when I was little would always say, ‘Actions speak louder than words’ Now that I am a mother I understand it’s more important the example we give to our children, than what we tell our children to do.

To bring up a child in the way he should go – travel that way yourself.
